Hi thill.. welcome to Log'N'Rock..

You are running an older version of HijackThis. It is important that you uninstall any previous versions by using Add/Remove programs in your control panel before installing a newer version.

Download HijackThis, see the instructions below.

  • Click HERE to download HijackThis Installer
  • Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.

Please use this version from now on..

DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Next..
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Please post back:
  • MBAM log
  • Fresh HJT log

Thanks..

Fred..

Senior Flinstone,

Thanks for jumping in on this. I will remove and install the newere Trend Micro HighJack This.

I have tried to install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware but have run into a message that essentialy states "cannot find sqlrun01.msi - please enter correct path". I do not have this nor do I have the XP Pro disk that came with the laptop. I tried to obtain this installation program from Microsoft but know so little about SQL server that I gave up. Please advise.

Hi thill..
That error message appears to be ralated to MSDE and SQL Server installs.. have you recently installed / uninstalled this software??

Fred

I have not done anything with the SQL server. I don't have a clue what it does. However, you should know that I inherited this laptop and the guy before me may have done anything.

I do appreciate your help

Thill

Your welcome thill...
If you don't know what it or what it does, you likely don't need it anyway!!
I would suggest you go to Add Remove programs and uninstall SQL Server if found there:

Should be SQL Server or MSDE (Microsoft Server Desktop Engine) or similar.

Try MBAM again and if it won't install we will try something else for now.
Apologies for the slow responses, but I have just moved home and am currently running on a very slooooooooooow dial up connection on my mobile phone!!

Hope to be back to normal very soon..
Fred..

Hi thill.. welcome back..

Lets try ComboFix.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Thanks..
Fred..

PS: Move went well though still haven't got broadband reconnected so please bear with me as I am on dial up and the speed is DIRE!!

Hi thill..
You are correct, that log is clean..

I notice from the ComboFix log that you have SopCast installed.
This is P2P software, do you use this yourself, or is it from the previous owner??

HERE is a link to more info..

Let me know..

Quote

redirects are virtually gone

So you are still getting redirects??.. can you note where you are being redirected to?

Lets do an online scan to be sure:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Thanks..
Fred..

Hi Fred,

The SOPCast is from the previous owner. I followed your link and it looks interesting. I will have to dig into it when I get time.

I did still get a few redirects but AVG "healed" a virus shortly after the ComboFix. I have not had a redirect since.

I will run the Kapersky tomorrow and post the log.

I really appreciate your help. It is fantastic that there are guys like you willing to help folks like me.

Regards
Thill

Fred

I tried to run Kaspersky Online and got a warning several times. "Starting Java applet has failed, go online to use this program". My system has Java 6.0 version 13 and tested as current and operating properly by sunmicro test.

I mus be doing something wrong. Perhaps it is the fact that I cannot disable AVG Free 7.0 without removing it. Might there be a conflict?

Sorry to be so much trouble

Tom

Hi thill.. could well be AVG..no problem, lets try Bitdefender instead.

BitDefender Online Scan
  • Click I Agree to agree to the EULA.
  • Allow the ActiveX control to install when prompted.
  • Click Click here to scan to begin the scan.
  • Please refrain from using the computer until the scan is finished. This might take a while to run, but it is important that nothing else is running while you scan.
  • When the scan is finished, click on Click here to export the scan results.
  • Save the report to your desktop so you can post it in your next reply.

Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

Any problems let me know..
Thanks

I ran Bitdefender and had zero infections.

Things are looking good. Let me know if you want any other scans done.

Thanks again. Your help was tremendous

Hi thill, you are welcome..
Glad to hear things are running better now, lets have a clean up.

Please go to Start --> Run, and type Combofix /u in the box that appears. Click OK afterwards. Notice the space between the X and the /u It needs to be there.

The above procedure will delete the following:
  • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
  • VundoFix backups, if present
  • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
  • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Set a new, clean Restore Point.

Then:

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 14 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 14...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • On the pulldown-menu, choose Windows as your platform.
  • Check "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement".
  • Click Continue.
  • Click on the link under Windows Offline Installation to download the file and save it to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. They should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u14-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Now to clean out the Java cache:

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Then click Delete Files...
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH checked
    Applications and Applets
    Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

I haven't used AVG for ages, is that a "suite"? ie. does it include antivirus and firewall or are you using windows firewall with just AVG antivirus?

Fred,

Java is now current. Thanks!

AVG Free is a suite. I have a 10 - user subscription to McAfee for all the computers at the office and here at home.

This whole mess was detected when McAfee could not update. I had used AVG a couple of years back and was able to download it before you came to my rescue. AVG is a full sweet but the free version is not very user friendly.

My subscription with Mcafee will run out in the fall. I am very open to suggestions you may have about continuing with McAfee or changing to another.

One plus McAfee has is their quick clean is pretty fast and it does some registry clean up.

Regards,
Tom

WOW!!
I read my reply and found sweet instead of suite. Even red necks from Texas know the difference
