Hi thill,

I usually recommend free versions of software for firewall / antivirus / antimalware etc, but these are only free for "personal use" so if you are running on 10+ pc's you would need volume licences for them.

I am currently using Sunbelt firewall with Vipre antispyware / antimalware and it seems to be doing the job ok..
Might be worth paying them a visit to ask what deal they could offer you for the number of copies you need etc..

Important thing to remember is that you must use only one of each program running in real time (active protection), as more than this can cause conflicts which can actually reduce the protection offered!.

I think MBAM can be bought in volume at about $15 or $16 a copy for a licence for use on between 10 and 19 pc's.
That's the full version with active protection / automatic updates etc..etc..

Link to sunbelt's Vipre for business use

The Sunbelt firewall is pretty good too, you can get to it from the above link.

There are of course many others around, you pay you money and take your choice etc.. but the above are ones I have used personally and found to work effectively.

MBAM in particular is updated several times a DAY !!

Whatever you choose, remember:
  • One firewall
  • One antivirus
  • One Antimalware
Running real time.
You can have others on the pc, but only use them for "on demand" scanning etc.

As for McAfee... never been impressed with it myself, though that's just my own opinion!..

This whole mess was detected when McAfee could not update

Question to ask I suppose is:
Where was McAfee when the pc was getting infected in the first place???

Never used a registry cleaner and don't see the point, there are probably upwards of a couple of hundred thousand lines / keys / values etc in the registry and people seem to think that cleaning out a few dozen "Orphaned" lines will speed up their computer???
Registry cleaning is in my opinion an urban myth, it does little or no good, and in the wrong hands can do great harm to your pc!!

There are other programs you can use for added protection which be in my last post (Prevention Speech) when we are done.

I read my reply and found sweet instead of suite. Even red necks from Texas know the difference

Didn't notice it myself until I saw your last post!!..
(So a Welshman in England didn't spot it)!!!

Fred,

I looked at the Vipre and liked that is supposed to comsume so little puter power. I am going to try it on this laptop for a bit before I switch over on my small pile of PCs. Thanks for the lead.

This laptop seems to be consistantly working quite well. Each time I do any scan of any type it comes up clean. My thanks to the Welshman in England.

You are welcome Tom, glad to hear things are good now.

A few further tips below:

Congratulations your machine appears to be clean! :)
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Install SpyWare Blaster
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/...p2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
http://www.update.microsoft.com
Note 1: If you are running Windows XP SP2, you should upgrade to SP3.
Note 2: Users of Norton Internet Security 2008 and newer versions should uninstall the software before they install Service Pack 3.
The security suite can then be reinstalled afterwards.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Happy safe surfing!

Regards,
Fred..
