I have been getting plenty of popups and alerts from AVG about these Trojans. Any help I can get is greatly appreciated. Below is my hijackthis log.

Hi findawg...

I see Viewpoint installed..

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present:

• Viewpoint
  
• Viewpoint Manager
  
• Viewpoint Media Player

Then:
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
  
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  
  
• Then click Finish.
  
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  
• If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Finally:
Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.

• Save it to your Desktop.
  
• Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  
• A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 14 and save it to your desktop.
  
• Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 14...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
  
• On the pulldown-menu, choose Windows as your platform.
  
• Check "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement".
  
• Click Continue.
  
• Click on the link under Windows Offline Installation to download the file and save it to your desktop.
  
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  
• Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  
• Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. They should have next icon next to it:
  
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Now to clean out the Java cache:

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.

• Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  
• Then click Delete Files...
  
• There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH checked

• Click OK on Delete Temporary Files window
  Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  
• Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Note from Security Check that your Antivirus is out of date?
Is this why you are using AVG?
If so and you don't intend renewing Norton subscriptions you should remove the program as it's no use if it's out of date, and running 2 A/V's is not recommended.

There are free A/V and Firewall options available...Let me know what you want to do..

Also you are running SP1, any particular reason you haven't updated windows to Service Pack 2 ??

Here's the best way to get rid of Norton..

To fully remove Norton AntiVirus, you should go here before uninstalling and download the files and print the instructions for removal, and follow them after uninstalling NAV.
How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus 2003/2004/2005/2006/2007/2008:
- Vista/XP/2000 - Click Here (note: this removes ALL Norton 2003/2004/2005/2006/2007/2008 products from your computer)

Please download only one of the above and install it to your computer

For the Windows Defender issue, if you want to keep it:
Go to Add / Remove programs and uninstall Windows Defender
Reboot the PC then go HERE and download a new copy and re-install it.

The Windows Defender issue was not solved. I see it in the Control Panel but not as a program that can be uninstalled. When I tried to install it anyway, these screens came up:






I ran a disk check last night and left the computer on all night. When I woke up in the morning, the computer was off. When I logged in, I noticed that my Sidebar was not present with the gadgets. I rebooted several times and it has not shown up as it should at startup. I went into the Control Panel and when I tried to click on anything related to the Windows Sidebar, this screen came up:

Hi findawg...

I have replicated that error now on my machine, it's because the service is disabled (I don't use Windows Defender so have it disabled).

Click Start type in the search box Services.msc.. this will open the services window..

Scroll down and find the service named Windows Defender and double click on it.

Make sure the Startup Type is set to Automatic then click Apply

In the Service Status section Click Start.. Ok your way out and close the services window.

That should sort it out and Defender should start up ok..

Regcure will scan for the errors and then demand you buy the software before it fixes it!!

Try this:
1. Click Start, All Programs, Windows Update.
If the update engine is taking you to Microsoft Update, you should change it to Windows Update.

2. Click Change Settings option in the left pane

3. Uncheck “Use Microsoft Update”.

Then run the updates and see if that fixes the problem..

Hello Fred

I ran a system restore back to after Service Pack 2 was installed. This helped get my sidebar gadgets back. This did not solve the Windows Defender issue. Afterwards, I ran an SFC and rebooted. This helped solve the Windows Defender issue. I am running Windows Updates now. Then I will run a disk-check for errors. Is there any way to ensure that I did not mess anything up/pick up malware or viruses along the way? I appreciate all the help.

Just as a checkup, run MBAM again to make sure there was nothing in the restore points to reinfect the pc. (We will purge them before we complete here).
Post the log along with a fresh HJT log and if they are clear you should be ok to finish up.

Hi findawg..

Not seeing anything bad there.. couple of remnant lines you can get rid of with HJT...

Run HijackThis
Click on do a system scan only
Place a check next to these lines(if still present)

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Then close all windows and browsers except HijackThis and click Fix Checked

Then:
Click Start and in the search box type rstrui then hit Enter..(Click Allow where appropriate)..
At the bottom, click on Open System Protection

Click Create, Give it a name it and then click Create again..
Click Ok once it's done..
Ok your way out..

Finally:
Now
Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.


If you have no further issues, you should be good to go!...
