Just the other day I noticed that I couldn't view my "Recent Documents" folder. I tried the "show hidden files and folders" option but the hidden stuff still won't show. So I tried going to Trend Micro's Housecall page but I couldn't access it. As well as other antivirus pages. I could go to Google and other sites, it's just the antivirus/spyware pages which I can't access. I downloaded Avira from CNET and ran it on my pc. There's this boot sector thing that shows up with the scan "BOO/Sinowal.E" but I can't get rid of it since Avira tells me to update first and the Avira's update can't seem to come through (probly because of the virus) - and I did an online search and found out from other forums that even if Avira's updated the thing still doesn't get removed. So anyway I'm here with the hopes that I can fix my pc with the help of HijackThis. Here's the log from my recent scan with it:

Just as a follow-up, maybe "BOO/Sinowal.E" and the fact that I can't access antivirus pages are two different problems. I used to use Trend Micro's Housecall before, and I read from posters' posts in other forums that Housecall also didn't register their "BOO/Sinowal.E" problem. I'm thinking maybe I've had it for a while now, and this new virus/malware/whatever shows up and adds even more complications by blocking access to antivirus sites.

Hi ..

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.


Then:
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt


Please post back both logs..

I can't seem to get past Malwarebyte's virus removal step, though. It keeps on hanging at this point (when it says "Quarantining: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\UpdatesDisableNotify") I tried stopping the scan whenever it detects viruses so I can remove them one by one - it seems to work ok then, and now I can access antivirus pages again. But whenever I do a full scan, some stuff still shows up and it ends up hanging with the part I quoted...

Hi Blue Toy...

Lets go with ComboFix first, then we will deal with the updates to windows / antivirus / java needed etc.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

When saving the file, rename it to Combo-Fix.exe << note the hyphen inserted into the name..

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop


  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools


  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.


  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.


  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.


**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
