How do I find out if my computer is 32-bit or 64-bit?
Well, technically it's not your computer which is 32- or 64-bit, it's the version of the operating system your computer is running. Vista is already available in 64-bit versions as well as the 32-bit versions that have been the standard. When Windows 7 is released later this year, it will also be available in 32- and 64-bit versions.
If you want to see what version of Vista your computer is running, follow these instructions:
•Click on Start
•In the Search box, type "system" (without the quotation marks)
•In the Programs list, click on System Information
•Select System Summary
If you see "x64-based PC" you are running a 64.bit version. If you see "x86-based PC" you are running the 32-bit version.
In XP:
•Click on Start Run
•Type "winmsd.exe" (without the quotation marks) and press Enter
•Select System Summary
•Locate the Processor item
If the value starts with x86, the computer is running a 32-bit version of XP. If it starts with AMD64 or ia64, you're running a 64-bit XP.
