:guitar: I did it,yippeee :jam:

I decided to look at administrative privileges. They were set at selective.
I changed them to normal. Not sure why changed to begin with but that did it.
Everything is back to normal, was able to open my anti virus

Thank you so much for all of your help & bearing with me through this, If I wasn't so tired I would do a jig :bluesbrothers2xq:

Well done MissM.. glad you got it sorted out!!...

The learning curve takes another angle!..its always the one under your nose that gets by you

Might now be advisable to clear out all that protection software you installed trying to fix it and just keep one antivirus and one antimalware program in place.
If you intend keeping Spybot, you will need to reactivate the TeaTimer module.

If you need any help with this just let me know.. :pint:

Hi, thank you Fred and Roddy,Could not have done it without all the help and encouragement to press on but take breaks too.
I forgot to mention when here this morning that I also had to turn off UAC,I did both when I was changing the other and then turned UAC back on and was having problems again. But it says it should not be left off.
Mentioned this at COF and Ron gave me an article to read, haven't had a chance to read that yet.

What is your opinion of it being off.

Have another question. Hope it is ok to post it here.
My network connection says not connected, but I am connected to to linksys when I opened it to check it out. It had never said that before until all the other trouble started.Does it matter that it says that?

Hi MissM, sorry for the delay in replying.. been at work most of today and just got home!

You might have read that it is recommended not to spend too much time on the internet while using an administrator account?
It is recommended that you only use Adminsitrator account for installing software / system maintenance etc and use a restricted "normal" user account the rest of the time.

The reason for this is that if your pc gets infected and your user account gets hacked / taken over (call it what you will) the remote user inherits the privileges of the hacked account ie. if you are logged in as administrator, he / she / it is also administrator and can do anything on your computer that you can sitting in front of it.

UAC (User account control) kind of forces you into running with a restricted account, although you may be logged in as a user with admin privileges you will notice that every time you try to run an installer or system utility, you will get the dimmed screen and then get the prompt to "allow or deny"?
So in a nutshell, I suppose you could say you are (effectively) running on a "restricted" account but with "Administrative options" available to you.
(You'll probably find a clearer explanation if you search, but that's the best I can do off the top of my head)...

Regards the network connection showing off when it's actually connected:
If you check in your network connections screen, you might find you have two active connections, one you are using ..the other you are not?
So one is "connected" and the other is not?

"Network Location Awareness" service rings a bell with me for that issue, but I will look into it first and let you know what I find.

Regards
Fred.

Hello again,
I find that after re-setting the system configuration to 'normal startup' it goes back to 'selective startup'
I tick 'normal' tick 'apply' then after apply it flips back to selective before I can click 'ok'

Also earlier I logged on and got just my background color and a little box popped up and said "personalized settings not responding' like windows mail does at times or IE does at times IE,blank page)anyway,I just let it set and finally it started up like normal but it set in that state for some time.

No hurry, will check back later tomorrow or watch for email notification.

Night!

Hi MissM..

Have you tried disabling the protection software before attempting to alter system config?
Possible that TeaTimer might interfere with this as it's intended to protect against "unauthorised" changes to the registry / system etc.

The "personalized settings not responding" message is possibly related to a corrupt user profile, if you have more than one user profile on the pc.. does the same issue occur when logged on as different user?

Regards
Fred

Hi Fred,thank you for replying.

It is starting up normal again, but still not able to keep the normal start-up going.
Will try what you suggested.

I am the only one that uses the computer. At least I think anyway.

IE still won't load, can go to it but nothing is there.

What if I set up a new account for myself just to see if I can open programs I might want to download. Would that be a big hassle? I noticed when in the administration accounts it said it recommended 'standard' but then said windows vista basic, premium etc can't use standard.
Hope I am making sense.

Hi MissM..
Set up a new account for yourself.. use any name.
If things are ok under the new user account, we can transfer the files from your "old" user into the new one and once confident things are ok, delete the old account.

Regards
Fred

Edit: Which version of IE are you using?

Hi,I set up a new account and it made no difference in the problem I had with other account. So have deleted new account.

IE 8 is what I have and it opens and then says IE has encountered a problem and looks for solution and then gives me opt. to close.I really don't use IE much but just in case I need it,don't like that it is not working.

I can open any new downloads and then can use them in normal mode.

Thank you for the reply. :)

Hi MissM..
Give this Microsoft wizard a try, it's designed to diagnose errors in IE.
Self Explanatory when you see it, but any problems give me a shout.

LINKY

Thanks
Fred

Hi,
Followed the instructions and it didn't work. I forgot to tell you IE won't close either until I click on it a lot and then the solution thing comes up and either closes it for me or I shut down to get rid of it.Nothing in the address bar, tried typing something in and it didn't move it either.

Thanks Fred:)

Hi Fred, Someone suggested that I upgrade to Vista 7. Would that solve my problems? I am right now looking at Upgrade adviser but haven't run it yet.Haven't looked at the price yet either.Don't want to spend the money if it won't help.
Also I have vista sp2,why do I keep getting from HP health check to get sp1?

Also, I did make those disc copies. Maybe use those, altho that scares the beejeebes out of me. :o

Hi MissM..

I presume you mean upgrading to Windows 7??
Looking around for a solution to this issue, I've noticed many people with Windows 7 looking for help with the same (or very similar) problems with IE8, so I'm not convinced it's worth spending the hard earned cash on a chance!

Try uninstalling IE8, this appears to have worked for some people with the same error messages as you are receiving.

To uninstall Internet Explorer 8, follow these steps:
  • Close all programs.
  • Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  • Double Click Program and Features
  • In the Tasks pane (Left hand side), click View installed updates.
  • In the list of installed updates, double-click Windows Internet Explorer 8.
You might need to scroll down quite a bit to find this.

Once done, this should revert IE to the previous version. See if the issues clear up or persist and we will go from there.

Thanks
Fred

Good Afternoon Fred,

Well glory be, I got desperate and downloaded Recuva from Piriform. Ran a recovery and all is back and running,IE is working everything.
I can't honestly tell you what I did but turn the thing on and let it do its thing.
Guess what is important is, it is fixed.
Whew what a relief and it is a free program:)

Thank you again for all the help and I am sure I will be running back if I run into any more problems =D

Hi Fred,

Well what I fixed didn't last long. In fact my puter bit the dust. Would turn on but only black screen and cursor showed.
Almost gave up and was going to take it in to someone.
Then did a search on my other puter and found something.
turned on hit F11 and I was then able to reformat.
Took hours but it is now like it was when I took it out of the box brand new.Except for a few programs I had to load and set my my email.
It all went pretty smoothly.
I am one happy woman this morning. :music: I am happy because I stuck to my guns and it paid off,I am happy cause I didn't think my brain could handle it,but it did,and of course happy that I didn't have to pay someone else to do it and I HAVE MY PUTER BACK. I even managed to reach around and pat myself on the back
