Yesterday, I installed Speccy, a program which checks hardware performance (Thank you Roddy32...lovely little program :) ).
As far as I am aware, there are absolutely no problems with the computer.

The hard drive (nearly 3 years old) test data is indicated on the following table.
Is it possible that somebody could help me decipher all those S.M.A.R.T data, please?
It is no good having the data, if I don't have a clue what they mean....
I have tried to find the Fujitsu smart codes, but with no success.

I do not have a clue Basil. Hopefully someone else will know. Peter maybe? Does the help file in the program give you any hints?

Here is a link from the creators.

On the left side there are more links besides the info on the page itself and they also have a forum.

No help or hint in the help file Rod. All it has is Help>About...

Thank you for the links. I think I will have to post the question on their forum and see what they come up with.

Thank you Rod.

I would assume that seeing as they created it, they should have people that know how to read it. I am not any sort of expert on this stuff. LOL. Hopefully someone else in this forum that IS sees this thread. If not, good luck in the Speccy forum and let us know what you find out.

Having posed the question, both at the software creators forum (Basil2744), and my computer manufacturer's forum, I have received no reply from either....For some reason, I seem to scare people off....

I have, therefore, made a strategic decision... there is nothing wrong with my hard drive... (famous last words??).... :P

Just in case I am wrong, however, I have decided, at long last, to buy an external hard drive and create an image back up of my entire drive. This, as I have never done it before, actually scares me, but it needs to be done... :exorcize:

Any recommendations, please, about a decent external hard drive? Not too expensive, easy to use and found in the UK... :)

Thank you guys.

Good decision. I have always heard good reports about Maxtor, Some versions come build it with a backup program that you can set to make a backup at whatever time you want. My dad had one that is supposed to me sent to me eventually and he had it set to make a total backup about once a week. It was gift to him so I don;t know how much it cost.

I am pretty sure that Jan has one of these also. I'll e-mail her the link and maybe she can give you some tips Basil.

Thank you Rod.

I am currently looking at this one that seems to have a decent spec.

Seagate is a reputable brand also. I don;t know anyone that has one though so I can't ask opinions, I don't know which brand Jan has. I sent her the link but she probably won't be home for a few more hours. If I remember correctly, when my sister bought dad's Maxtor, I think she said it was around 150 bucks which is a little cheaper than the Seagate. Dad loved it.

Hi Basil,
Got one myself recently (couple of weeks ago maybe)?

LINKY

Don't know much about external HD's but this one is 500 Gig disk and comes with Nero backitup included.
Does image and file backups automatically etc..

Not saying it's the best 'cos this is the first one I've used, but it seems to do the job ok..

Bought it in Argos about £60 I think it was.. might get it cheaper if you look around though..

Hi Basil and Roddy

Well, I hardly feel qualified to give help but I can tell you what I use for external backup.
Trust me, this is simple if i can do it...

For an External I use a "Simple Drive:
To look at this drive see here:
Simple Drive

There is a program on the drive but you do not have to use it...

The program I use is "Casper":
and you can read about this program here:
Casper Backup Program

It tells you when you are done with the backup if it was done ok but I suppose the real test would be when you have to do a total reinstall to see how well it worked, I have not had to do that as yet (knock wood!)

I have just done a quick search Basil and found this, and if you scroll to further down the page it may give some indication on what you are looking for.

Thank you "jasper the rasper"....this is an excellent article which does explain a lot of things. I never realised there could be so many parameters dictating HD health/performance.... :o

It just reinforces that my decision to get myself an external hard drive is the correct one.
I have not yet made a final choice, but I rather like this one. Not particularly cheap but I quite like the spec and all the reviews I have come across are excellent.

Many thanks for your help jdc and Fred.
