Hello again,

I keep getting window update alerts (over a week now) they keep failing.
My explorer has not worked for some time and when snoopy(COF) posted to go to IE to download the updates it dawned on me that that is most likely the reason they are not updating. So tried to re-install IE 8 and it will not install. I did every trick they told me to try but just will not install.
Ran malwarebytes,no problems, ran e-set no problems ran super antispyware,no problems, and defender and no problems. Turned off Firewall and e-set and tried again still wouldn't used their(ies) fixit and still doesn't install.

I am so frustrated, I have even tried to install ie9 beta and that won't work and the update icon continues to sit on my task bar and if I restart it comes right back. :hmm:

Thanks for any help!

Hi MissM.. welcome back...

Before we do anything...
  • Did you actually install IE8 as part of MS updates originally?
  • If so, when you uninstalled it, how did you go about it? (ie. Which method did you use)?
  • When you say

    Quote

My explorer has not worked for some time
Are you referring to Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer??
  • When you reboot, do you get any error messages or "Configuring updates ???% done" etc??
  • When your updates "fail" it should give you an error number ie. "error 80246008" or similar, can you make a note of it and let me know please?

I will have a look around for a fix for this as I had a similar problem myself.
Think I had to reconfigure Updates / files catalogue / delete something..but it's quite a while ago so wouldn't want to guess at it!!..

Fred.

Fred.

Hi Fred, I uninstalled as when I tried to re-install it told me I had one on my machine,(which didn't work) so uninstalled through add/remove
I do get error #'s but when I go the the solutions the same #'S are not there.

Is there a difference between Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer?

I went through this website to re-install http://internet-expl...n.softonic.com/ and another website but now can't remember have done it so many times.
I will be back and give you the errors I get when trying to do updates.
Hope I made myself clear. Not very good at that.

I remembered the other website this is the other one I tried to use http://www.microsoft...wide-sites.aspx

Oh and FF keeps crashing too.
Had to come back and re-type all this.

Here are the 2 updates that keep failing. The first one is not on the list of info to help fix it.

"WindowsUpdate_80070673"

2nd one says this:
Windows Update error 2

If you receive Windows Update error 2 while installing a language pack, you might need to do one of the following:

If you received the error after cancelling the update, try to install the language pack again and do not cancel the installation.

If you received the error but did not cancel the update, restart the computer and then try to install the language pack again.

Note
Installing language packs affects large areas of the operating system and can take up to several hours, depending on the number of language packs that you have selected. We recommend installing only the language packs that you want to use, installing them when you are not using the computer for other activities, and closing any open programs before you begin.

To install language packs
If you received the error but did not cancel the update, restart the computer and then follow the steps below. If you cancelled the update and received the error, simply follow the steps below (do not restart the computer).

Click to open Windows Update.

In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.

Click View available updates.

Select the language pack that you want to install, and then click Install. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

After installing a language pack, we recommend that you install any additional updates that Windows found for your computer. To learn how, see Install Windows updates.

If you are using Windows Vista Ultimate, and are receiving this error when installing the Windows Vista language pack, see the knowledge base article titled Installation of Windows Vista language pack from Windows Update fails on the Microsoft Help and Support website. For more information about language packs in general, see Windows Vista Ultimate language pack release information on the Microsoft Help and Support website. You can also go to the Windows Update Solution Center website to request support by e‑mail.

Errors this applies to:

Hi Fred:)

I wanted to add that I tried putting explorer on again tonight and it says cannot because I have it on already.
I went to add/remove,not there and I went to Revo Uninstaller, not there.
So it must be hidden somewhere, did a search, went to start and typed in Internet Explorer and it showed on the list but when I clicked on it, it wouldn't open which is the problem I had to begin with.

Me again,lol

I use ccleaner, ran their registry thing and it showed a ton of IE registry corrupted & missing files.
I didn't 'fix issues' as I am afraid to mess with the registry.

Hi MissM...

Let's try this first:

Go to Control Panel double click Programs and Features.
At the left of the window under Tasks you will see a link for View installed updates

Click on that link and the window will populate with all the updates on your computer.
Up top right of the window where it say's Search, type in Windows Internet Explorer.

If present, you should see the Windows Internet Explorer 8 appear in the window below.

Right click on it and select uninstall.<< Allow any prompts that appear

You should see a small window saying Please wait while updates are being uninstalled or similar.
If so, let it do it's stuff, might take a few minutes. Then it will ask for a reboot, just allow it to..

I have just tried this on my laptop.. Vista SP2 32 bit running IE8 etc, and it reverted back to IE7 as it should.

(Off now to try updates back to IE8)!!... :exorcize:

Let me know how you go, ..
Thanks
Fred

Hi Fred,

I followed your instructions and got it off but now I cannot find ie 7 in programs.
I went to Microsoft to try and download it and it said I already have it as it came with vista. :hmm:

Thanks Fred for any help. :)

Hi MissM,
If the IE8 uninstall went ok, it should automatically revert to IE7 without having to install it.
It is the "base" version with Vista so when updates like IE8 etc are removed IE7 is the default.

Go to Start and type internet explorer in to the search box.

Or:
Click on All Programs and it should be listed there?

Fred..

If the IE8 uninstall was successful you should have reverted to IE7 by default..

Let's check the file version you have now..

Go to Start \ Computer navigate to: C:\Program Files \ Internet Explorer<<<< This folder..

Look for the file: iexplore, right click on the file and select Properties..

Click on the Details tab and check the File Version line..

Please let me know what you have, if it's IE7 it should read 7.0.6002 <<< that was the version number on mine when I binned IE8 earlier.

Once you have the file info, close the properties window, then:
Right click again on iexplore, and select Open... IE Should run from there...

Just try the IE8 update, and don't select the others.
Lets see what happens, we can always remove again in the same way..

Let me know what happens.

Got to go to bed now.. 1 am and got to get up for work at 6.. :exorcize:

Will check back tomorrow..

Fred..
