My husband's computer keeps showing a pop up from the system tray that says "You have a security problem" and will not go away. Even if you ignore it, it will take you to different websites that "scan" the computer (I try to exit them or say no or cancel but they won't go away) and claim the computer has viruses and malware and no security software, which is untrue as we run McAfee from Cox. How can I get rid of this?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

P.S. My husband was impatient so he took his laptop to Best Buy yesterday (where we bought it about a month ago) and the Geek Squad said this: "unit will load into the MRI boot menu then go immediately into the HDD boot. Unable to get unit to function differently with ext. Optical. Suspect either bad MOBO or optical, recommend that unit be sent to SVC for further testing/repairs."

I am using that laptop as we speak; I haven't had any issues with it booting up or with the optical drive -- what's your opinion of their diagnosis? Just curious.

PLEASE tell me that didn't cost you anything. The only think I can see wrong is the malware we're getting rid of here. I can't tell you how many times I've had people come in and say they'd taken their computers to them and they said they solved the problem, collected their money, and sent them on their way, just to have the problem still there. How is it running now?

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Cognac] C:\Users\Woody\AppData\Local\Temp\~tmpb.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSFox] C:\Users\Woody\AppData\Local\Temp\yyy7052.exe

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Look for these files and delete them:

C:\Users\Woody\AppData\Local\Temp\~tmpb.exe
C:\Users\Woody\AppData\Local\Temp\yyy7052.exe

Reboot your computer.

If they weren't there, that's great! That would mean they were just orphans. If you would, please, have another run with MBAM to be sure everything is gone. Post the report if there's anything in it. If not, just let me know how it's running. You'll need to update Java.

Updating Java

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6_u_10.
  
• Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
  
• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  
• The page will refresh.
  
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

No, he didn't pay those "Geeks" anything @ BB. I did what you said and there is no longer any malware. But the instructions below for updating Java I am having trouble with, as I cannot find what you listed on their website.
