Cheaper, thinner and lighter than a tablet

A special edition of the Sony Reader PRS-T1 sees a tie-in with Harry Potter author JK Rowling whereby visitors to the www.pottermore.com interactive website can redeem a voucher for a free download of the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
The 6in screen (600x800-pixel) Sony Reader PRS-T1 supports 16 levels of grey, can displaye ePub and PDF documents as well as Jpeg images and has an E-Ink Pearl v200 display. Sony says the 2GB memory is sufficient to store 1200 books of 1MB or less each. Additional books and images can be loaded up via an SD Card. Capacities of 32MB are supported.
The Sony Reader PRS-T1 is set to go onsale in the UK from October. As well as the Amazon Kindle, it will compete directly with the newly-launched Sony Tablet S, which also comes with Sony Reader software.
