Hi. I did a HJT Log and found items under 016 for Invoke Solutions Participant Controls. I don't remember seeing this before and I am unsure what it is. I opened an e-mail from a friend and instead of a regular e-mail there were a bunch of jumbled letter, signs, numbers and it looked like it wasn't good to open. That is why I immediately did a log just to see if anything put itself on my computer that shouldn't be there. If possible could someone help me with this?

I am using a compaq presario, SP3, Windows XP, IE. I have Ad-aware 2008, sybot search and destroy, winpatrol, spyware blaster, a-squared security, tuneup 2008. For my antivirus I have AVG free and firewall is comodo. Here is my log...

Hi yjsk2100 ..Welcome to BFC...
Sorry for the delay..

Invoke Solutions appear to be a company dealing with Market Research information.
Can't find anything "bad" about it but you don't have this software installed, you can safely fix that line with HJT.
The 016 lines are just ActiveX components and if needed they are simply downloaded again when / if you next visit the site you got it from!.
Here's Invoke Solutions website:
Linky.....

To fix the line:
Run HijackThis
Click on do a system scan only
Place a check next to these lines(if still present)

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O16 - DPF: {D8AA889B-2C65-47C3-8C16-3DCD4EF76A47} (Invoke Solutions Participant Control(MR)) - http://rms2.invokeso...1450/MILive.cab

Then close all windows and browsers except HijackThis and click Fix Checked

Just to check further:
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Please post back:
  • MBAM log
  • New HJT log

Are you experiencing any particular issues / symptoms??

Thanks
Fred..

Hi. Thanks for reading my log. The only thing I am experiencing right now is my computer freezes now and then. I will be in the middle of something and the screen freezes. But I think that started when my AVG updated. I did what you asked me to do. I removed both items from my log and then ran the scan using Malwarebytes. Here are both the scans from Malware and HJT.

Let me know if all is okay? Still have the freezing of screen but I may have to uninstall and reinstall my antivirus, that is if that is what is causing the freezing in the first place.

Hi yjsk2100...
MBAM picked up a few items, but the HJT log looks ok now.
Lets run an online scan to be sure and that should be it from a malware point of view!

Panda's ActiveScan from Here and perform a full system scan.

1. Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button NOTE: If you have a popblocker enable you will have to allow popup here.
2. A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
3. Enter your Country
4. Enter your State/Province
5. Enter your e-mail address and click send
6. Select either Home User or Company
7. Click the big Scan Now button
8. If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
9. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan
10. Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
11. Post Panda scan results in your next reply with others requested.

Once the scan is complete, reboot your PC << Important..
Then run HJT and check if the following lines are still showing in the log:

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\RunOnce: [nltide_3] rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSectionEx nLite.inf,C,,4,N (User 'NETWORK SERVICE')
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\RunOnce: [ShowDeskFix] regsvr32 /s /n /i:u shell32 (User 'NETWORK SERVICE')
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [nltide_3] rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSectionEx nLite.inf,C,,4,N (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [nltide_3] rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSectionEx nLite.inf,C,,4,N (User 'Default user')

If they are still there, just fix them with HJT (Runonce keys are supposed to "run once" on reboot and then be removed).

The "freezing" issue could be a conflict between your protection programs if, as you said it started when you installed / updated one of them.

I suggest you just go back to basics:
  • Firewall < Comodo??
  • Antivirus < AVG??
  • ONE Antimalware < a-squared??

Just one of each should be running "real time" on your system.
Disable all the rest from running real time and see if that solves the problem.
It's ok to have other programs installed, but only use them for "on demand" scanning eetc..
EG: On my system, I use Sunbelt Firewall and Vipre antivirus / antimalware.
For "occasional" scans I use MBAM (quick scan).
I also have Winpatrol and SpywareBlaster but they are OK to have as they are not run as services.

Please post back the Panda log along with a new HJT log..
Let me know how things are running now?

Thanks..
Fred..

I didn't get the Panda log. After running the scan for almost 5 hours it stayed on 18% and then my computer froze. When it unfroze I felt I had to click the cancel button which I did. The progress bar completed to 100%. I copied what it said but for some reason I lost it but in a nutshell it said:

Scan complete. No infections found. AVG is current and up to date.

There was no place to click to let me get the log. It did not remove the 04's on my HJT log so I did them myself. Here is my new HJT log. Let me know if I need to re-run the panda and why did it take so long.

Hi yjsk2100 ..
Some online scanners can be "quirky" as to what browser / security setup you are using..
I'm not seeing anything in the logs which would cause the freezes you describe.

To be sure and take a more in depth look at your system please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Thanks..

Okay, sorry it took me a while to get back to you. Tried to install Combo fix but it wouldn't take. I downloaded it and then clicked run and there was a small progress bar but once that ran it went away and then nothing. Not sure if Combo fix runs in the background or not. Since it wouldn't take I uninstalled programs one at a time to see which one might be holding it up. I think it might be Ad=aware 2008 special edition I installed.

I downloaded combo fix once more, got that progress bar, clicked run and then nothing again. Then I clicked the desktop icon and it said I had a threat Trojan Horse. I clicked heal and it went away and then nothing again. I guess I am not sure how this program works. Some explanation please to see if what I am doing is right. After I figure it out and it runs right I will post combo log as well as another HJT log.

Hi yjsk2100 ..

Quote

Okay, sorry it took me a while to get back to you.
No problem at all, take all the time you need!.

It's important that you disable all protection programs before running ComboFix.
Some of the tools we use are carrying out tasks like deleting files, modifying registry values etc.. so it is regarded by your protection programs as "suspicious activity"..
Your antivirus can't tell the difference between good / bad programs and can block their operation.

Please try to run ComboFix again after disabling Adaware and any other applications running, if this still doesn't work.. try rebooting your PC to safe mode and run ComboFix then (Not ideal, but better than nothing to start with)!
If it still won't run, then we need to look closer at what is preventing Combofix from running.

Disconnect from the internet before disabling your protection programs, then run the tool.
Let me know how it goes..

Thanks..
Fred..

Again, sorry for the delay in getting back here. My daughter's house burned down and have been quite busy. Took some time off so decided to check this out again. First I have been reading about the combo fix. It says unless I know what I am doing I had better be careful using this.

I did find out how to disable my AVG, Firewall, Spybot S&D Teatimer. WinPatrol and Windows Defender which I will do once I find out if they are the ones needing to be disabled. But I also have the program A-squared Security and spywareblaster. Do I need to disable both of these also???

Once I find out I will disable and then run combo fix. Depending on how long the scan takes I may have to do this tomorrow or the next day.

Thanks for helping me and I will get this done I promise. I did uninstall Ad-aware 2008 because I thought that was the culprit on the freezing but computer still freezes up every now and then.

Since I have Spybot S&D Teatimer and Windows Defender Real Time Protection and AVG resident Shield, are these all conflicting with each other??? :(

Hi yjsk!

Fred posted this awhile back, he'll definitely reply when he gets back :)

As for your question..

What you SHOULD disable: Windows Defender, SpyBot TeaTimer, asquared
What you SHOULD NOT disable: AVG AntiVirus & SpywareBlaster

In fact, you should uninstall Windows Defender. There are much better apps out there. Hope this helps.

Hi all,
Just to let you know..
I am moving house (again) starting tomorrow, and my phone line is being transfered to the new address.
Phone and broadband will be cut off here sometime today (6th), and whilst the phone will be connected almost immediately, the broadband connection will be !!...

Sometime between the 6th and the 16th of February

BT being what it is... probably be closer to the 16th than the 6th!...
So if I "drop off the radar" for a while, you know why!.. :)

Fred...

Okay. Decided it was time to take the bull by the horns and run combofix. But first I will tell you what I did first. I disabled a-squared, windows defender and spybot teatimer. I had already saved combofix to my desktop and so I ran it. Before it got very far it said I needed to disable my AVG and I did. Combo fix then started and below is the log...

The problems I seem to be having are... My computer freezes every now and then. It seem to do it when I turn on the computer from my desktop. I can't seem to get system restore to restore and I loose the ads on the yahoo home page. And as I type this the cursor sticks every now and then. It is becoming a nuisance.... Please let me know if I have anything wrong and what steps to take and fix it.

Hi yjsk2100..
After researching this issue, I think this problem is more likely to be software related.

You will note in your HJT log (running Processes) this line:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\office12\offlb.exe <<< Office Lifeboat process.
It appears to be "Microsoft Office Program Recovery tool".

Googling this filename gives quite a few hits with problems very similar to yours ie. freezing pc etc, and seems to be related to Office 2007 conflicting with HP printers??
LINKY..

When the freeze next occurs, you could try opening task manager and stop the offlb process. If your pc runs fine without it that will confirm it is Office 2007 causing the problem.

If you do have a HP printer then the issue has been solved by uninstalling the printer software and downloading the drivers direct from the HP website??

Does any of the above "fit the profile" of your problem??

Fred...

Thanks for the quick reply once I got back to you. As for the freezing, so far today (knock on wood), the computer hasn't frozen. I have the ads back on my Yahoo page but haven't checked out system restore because I don't need it right now. As for Combofix. Is it okay to uninstall it from my computer? What about Malwarebytes you had me install? (I am keeping malwarebytes updated but not sure if I should use it since you told me to install it to help fix my computer).

As for the HP printer. I use to have a HP printer/scanner/copier all in one. It quit working so I got a new printer, a Samsung laser black and white one. I looked at my add/remove programs and I see I still have the HP printer installed although I don't have that printer anymore. Guess I should remove that one. Didn't realize I still had it.

If my computer does freeze I will check task manager for the offlb. Although the last time computer froze so did all programs even task manager.

You have been a big help to me. After looking at all my logs, was there anything drastically wrong with my computer?

Hi yjsk2100..
No problem, I've been offline myself for a couple of weeks due to moving home!!..
Glad to hear things appear to be good now..

Let's have a cleanup:
Please go to Start --> Run, and type Combofix /u in the box that appears. Click OK afterwards.
Notice the space between the X and the /u It needs to be there.

The above procedure will delete the following:
  • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
  • VundoFix backups, if present
  • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
  • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Set a new, clean Restore Point.

It would be wise to uninstall the HP printer software if you no longer use it as it appears to be a known issue as shown in the link I gave in my previous post!

As for MalwareBytes, you can (should) keep that and update it regularly.
It is (in my opinion) just about the best in program in it's class available at present, just update and run it once or twice a week..

Regards,
Fred..
