Are there any free security products that will conduct live, real-time scans from a USB drive? I've found several that will scan after the fact allowing one to remove malicious software after infection but I would like to find products similar to Spybot S & D, Comodo Internet Security, and Threatfire which provide real-time protection for the flash drive if the host computer has no or little protection.

Hi, Gort. Welcome to Log'N'Rock!

It sounds as though you want to protect your USB stick not put portable apps on it for cleaning friends & family computers. One such program I am aware of that has been around for quite a while is ClaimWin's portable antivirus: http://portableapps....lamwin_portable

There is also SMP Antivirus. http://sourceforge.n...group_id=209235

If you have sensitive files on the USB stick, you may want to use something like True Crypt: http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/

Is this what you were looking for?

(Note: I have not used any of the above-referenced products.)

Hi, Gort.

Another member of the security team passed along the link to the avast! antivirus U3 Edition which is designed to protect U3 smart drives from viruses and other forms of malware. http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-u3.html

Please let us know if this is what you were looking for.

Thank you.

Hi, Gort. Another thought occurred to me. It would be wise to disable autorun on your computer if you use your portable media on other computers. This may be of interest to you in that regard:
