In Topic: Alternative Becky! Help File
Posted 7 Apr 2012
It's been approx 5 months since I updated my help file, and a new version is at http://davidskirk.org/becky/ - nothing big, just some clarifications on the backup and restore tips and a tip on setting socket options. The CHM file is still the preferred version, but there is also a PDF version and a webversion at http://davidskirk.org/beckyhelp/ The web version may have some incompatibilities with different browsers, but I did test with those I have. If you have any difficulties with the web version, I encourage using one of the other two versions.
For any new members here, this is just a hobby of mine; I'm no guru, but I watch for tips here and for new Becky! features to add to the file.

Okay, no new content, but I created a workable version of my help file on the web at http://davidskirk.org/beckyhelp/ In November, I created a PDF version that some users liked and creating a web version seemed a reasonable next step. The back button on browser doesn't work properly (yet) from Firefox browsers newer than version 3, but it seemed to function properly with IE8, Opera, Safari and Chrome. My PC is set at 1024x768 so it may look different on other settings. I also updated the basic page at http://davidskirk.org/becky/ to link to it. There has been no update to content since the November release. And... happy 2012 to everyone.

My latest help file is now available at http://davidskirk.org/becky/ In addition to a help file (CHM) I now also include a PDF format for those who like to read in book fashion - but I still recommend the CHM file as primary reference because of its index and search facility. I had received a couple of inquiries on a PDF version for new users and those who like to read in PDF layout so I hope this helps.
Major changes are in profiles and global profiles, plus more information on backup and restore capability. This version has approximately 2,000 more words than prior version.
Feedback or errors or omissions, preferably offline, is welcome as I had been taking a wrong turn with profiles and have made a correction.

I have a new version of my Becky! help file available from
http://davidskirk.org/becky/ Size is now 32,200 words, up 1,500 words from the July version. Several suggestions had been sent to me that seemed a good fit for a help file, plus I included some bits of information on some of the topics that have been discussed here, such as compaction, protocol logs, debugging ISP setups and other stuff. From the suggestions I added information on doing backups, creating archives, accessing POP mail on the server and some other odds and ends... The help file also has a slightly different look. To complement the information on backups, I now include a registry backup plugin with instructions (for those who might not already have one.)
As before, this is a hobby of mine and primarily targeted at new or casual users who periodically need assistance. Suggestions - and corrections - are always welcome - offline, preferably, so as not to disrupt other discussions. Thanks,

I've solved the first problem.
The second issue, with the number of unread new emails initially being displayed, but then not showing after the mailbox is clicked on, is stumping me.
I used a file transfer program to move my entire PC to a new computer.
File transfer programs have to make some assumptions, especially when moving from, say, winXP to win7. It appears that the stored info for the account doesn't match where the folders are. So, Becky's information knows where the files are, but when the mailbox is opened, the file pointers don't match. My suggestion is to reinstall Becky on the new computer and let it create an initial Becky! folder. Then, shut down Becky and copy the Becky! folder from old computer to same location. Becky should then open with no problem.
